Sussex Place
FORMER SUNDERS GLASSWORKS, SUSSEX PLACE, BRIGHTON The former Saunders Glassworks off Sussex Place in the centre of Brighton is a model example of redundant brownfield city centre site. The Government is encouraging the development of these sites to address the housing shortage in the south of England, ease the pressure on the green belt, regenerate run down city centres and reduce car dependency. The proposal is an intensive redevelopment of the site to provide eighteen affordable flats and thirty six flats for sale suitable for local town centre workers. The proximity of good public transport links allows for a car free development. Despite the maximisation of the site area the building to relates unobtrusively to the surrounding buildings and adjacent conservation area. The design is attractive and modern but respects the particular characteristics of the Brighton's Regency townscape.
